Companion Care in Pasadena, CA: Frequently Asked Questions

Companion care in Pasadena, CA is non-medical help at home: a caregiver who lends a hand with daily routines, keeps your parent company and gets them to appointments and outings. Right at Home has served the Pasadena area for 18 years.

Below are the questions families ask most before they call. If yours isn't here, ask us. The first consultation is free.

What to think about before you call

You don't need every answer before you pick up the phone. The free consultation is where the right care gets worked out. It helps to have a few things in mind:

  • Which daily tasks have become hard: cooking, laundry, shopping, getting around town
  • Whether company and conversation matter as much as the chores
  • Which days and times would help your family most
  • Whether hands-on help such as bathing or dressing is also needed. That is a different service, described on our service details page

Write down what worries you most about your parent being home alone. Those worries usually shape the care plan more than any checklist.

What the free consultation looks like

It starts with a phone call. We ask about your loved one's wishes and needs. Then we visit the home for a basic assessment of needs and surroundings. The visit is free, and it is how the right care gets decided.

Next we write a person-centered care plan that reflects your parent's history, routines and preferences. We go through it with your family in detail and change it however you like.

Then we match a caregiver by interests, personality and the services needed. After care begins, caregivers write up each visit, and supervisory staff visit the home from time to time. See how to start care for the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is companion care for seniors?+

Companion care is non-medical help at home. It covers light housekeeping, laundry and meal preparation. It also covers conversation, games, walks and outings, rides to appointments and errands, and reminders such as medication or appointment reminders. The goal is to keep daily life familiar and social. Your consultation decides which parts fit your parent.

What is the difference between companion care and personal care?+

Companion care centers on household help, company, getting around and reminders. Personal care is hands-on help: bathing or showering, dressing, toileting and incontinence help, and mobility support. Many families start with one and add the other later. We talk through which fits during the free assessment. More on the details page.

Can a companion caregiver drive my parent to doctor appointments in Pasadena?+

Transportation support covers medical appointments, grocery shopping, social outings and errands, and caregivers can also drive, for example to visit friends. We settle the transportation arrangements for your family in the consultation. Caregivers do not provide medical treatment.

How much does companion care cost per hour?+

We don't publish an hourly rate. Cost depends on the care you need and the hours, and we give you a quote after the consultation. We generally bill by the hour, after service, usually weekly. A couple sharing one caregiver gets a discounted rate. See cost and what's included.

How do families pay for companion care?+

Private pay is the starting point: major credit cards and ACH bank transfer. Medi-Cal and Medicare, including Medicare Advantage, cannot be used to pay. Other options, such as veteran benefits and long-term care insurance, are explained on our paying for care page.

Where do you send caregivers?+

We serve Pasadena, West Covina, Covina and nearby San Gabriel Valley communities. We also serve Los Angeles, Glendale, Azusa, Rancho Cucamonga and San Bernardino. See our service areas or the Los Angeles page. Call to confirm your address.

How are caregivers screened, and what if we're not happy with ours?+

Caregivers are bonded and insured and go through background and reference checks. We match by interests, personality and services needed, then give the caregiver an orientation on your parent's needs. If your family is not satisfied, one phone call gets a new caregiver matched.

Can I reach someone outside office hours?+

Yes. Our care managers can be reached 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call (626) 678-8826 whenever you need to talk about changes in your parent's care.
