Respite Care for Disabled Veterans: How Families Pay for It
Respite care for disabled veterans in Pasadena is usually paid for in one of three ways: a VA-authorized benefit, long-term care insurance reimbursement, or private pay. Right at Home of Pasadena is an approved, contracted VA home care provider through TriWest, and the office helps families work through the process.
Whether a benefit applies depends on your policy, the veteran's eligibility and what the VA authorizes. The free in-home assessment is where we sort that out together. Call (626) 678-8826 or start with a free consultation.
What we accept and how we help with claims
Private pay is the default. We take major credit cards and ACH bank transfer. We can also work with VA benefits and long-term care insurance.
| Way to pay | What to know |
|---|---|
| Private pay | Major credit cards or ACH transfer |
| VA benefits (TriWest) | Available within what the VA approves; a VA clinician sets the number of visits |
| Long-term care insurance | The family pays first, then claims reimbursement; we help with the claim |
| Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medi-Cal | Cannot be used to pay for our care |
We don't publish hourly rates. After a consultation we give a quote based on the care needed and the hours. Care is generally billed by the hour, after the service, usually weekly. See what affects cost for more.
Respite care for veterans, veteran spouses and family caregivers
Respite care gives a family caregiver time to step away while a trained caregiver covers. A spouse who looks after a veteran is often the person who needs the break. Our respite care is booked by the hour, so you choose how often and for how long.
Through the VA, we are an approved and contracted provider via TriWest. The service has to be started by the veteran or a VA medical professional. The VA clinician decides how many visits are allowed, and we help with the steps. Coverage depends on eligibility, clinical needs, local availability and VA authorization, so we can't promise hours or a start date.
A good first move is to ask your VA care team or social worker about an assessment and authorized home care. County veterans service officers also know these programs and can help with applications.
Separately, the VA runs needs-based pension benefits, including Aid and Attendance, for some wartime veterans and surviving spouses. The VA alone decides who qualifies.
Long-term care insurance, Medicare and Medi-Cal respite care
- Long-term care insurance. These policies often pay for non-medical home care, but terms vary. Check the waiting period, which tasks are covered, the benefit limits, which records the insurer needs and who submits them. Ask whether it reimburses you or pays the agency directly. We help you file the reimbursement claim, but approval is up to your insurer.
- Original Medicare. It does not pay for ongoing non-medical (custodial) home care when that is the only care needed. Qualifying skilled home-health services are a different benefit. Medicare Advantage plans differ, and some offer limited supplemental benefits, so ask your plan. Neither Medicare nor Medicare Advantage can be used to pay us.
- Medi-Cal respite care.Medi-Cal can't be used to pay for our services. In California, eligible low-income residents may instead apply to their county for In-Home Supportive Services, a separate program. A county social worker assesses the home and decides the hours.
